Now in its 20th year, Shots 4 Meningitis is dedicated to raising money for meningitis awareness, research, and survivor support. The event will feature typical golf tournament-style play and contests like longest drive, closest to the pin and a hole in one challenge – with a $10,000 prize. The funds raised will allow the Foundation to continue its critical work raising awareness of meningitis and supporting survivors and their families whose lives are forever changed from their experience with the disease.
Shots 4 Meningitis is being organized by John B. Grimes (Frisco, TX). John survived meningitis as a sophomore at Texas Tech University in 1998. The disease left him almost completely blind in both eyes and with a range of other physical challenges to overcome, but John was able to graduate from college, begin a career in the financial services industry and have a family. Today, John is a passionate advocate for meningitis awareness and education. Read more about his miraculous meningitis experience at johnsstory.com.
"I didn't know what meningitis was until it nearly killed me in 1998," John said. "If a round of golf can educate someone and potentially save a life, we’ve achieved something powerful."
Registration is $100 per golfer and includes two hours of play, lunch, drinks and snacks. After golf is complete there will be a silent auction, awards ceremony, raffle drawing and prizes.

EVENT BACKGROUND AND FUTURE
Shots 4 Meningitis began as an annual charity golf tournament held in Waukesha, Wisconsin dedicated to raising awareness of meningitis and supporting survivors who live with the long-term impacts of the disease. The event was started by Bob and Dee Dee Werner, whose daughter, Becky, contracted meningitis as a healthy 20-year-old college student and passed away from the disease within 48 hours. The Werners never thought something like this could happen to their family, and they wanted to do what they could to spread awareness of meningitis, educate parents and families about vaccination and help fund research. Since the first tournament back in 2005, Shots4Meningitis has raised more than $700,000.
With this inaugural Top Golf outing, Shots 4 Meningitis is expanding its footprint and kicking off a new World Meningitis Day tradition. Looking ahead, the organization plans to gather communities at Top Golf locations around the country each October 5th to spread awareness, fuel research, share stories, and offer hope to those touched by this devastating disease.
Support for the event comes from the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations (CoMO) as part of their World Meningitis Day 2024 Advocacy Fund pilot. Learn more at comomeningitis.org.
